APA ITU GIA?
Nah sertifikatlah yang akan menjelaskan segala sesuatunya tentang batu permata tersebut. Dengan adanya sertifikat pada batu permata kita, maka semua hal yang bersifat penting akan terpapar informasinya dan seharusnya informasi yang disebutkan dapat dipertanggung jawabkan oleh penerbitnya. Seperti berat, kejernihan, kualitas asahan, info batu tersebut di treatment alakadarnya, di treatment tipe apa, atau tidak di treatment sama sekali.

Color
Dalam bukunya, Mahardi Paramita yang juga penggagas lembaga sertifikasi berlian di Indonesia, Adamas Gemological Laboratory of Indonesia (AGL) itu menulis, semakin bening suatu berlian semakin tinggi nilainya. Berlian terbaik adalah berlian yang tanpa warna.
Sama seperti clarity, untuk menunjukkan kualitas, warna berlian juga memiliki skala. Semakin besar nilai skala warna, semakin rendah harganya. Tingkat warna berlian yang dikembangkan oleh GIA adalah pada kisaran putih (colorless) sampai kuning, yakni D-F colorless (white); G-J hampir tidak berwarna; K-M kekuning-kuningan; N-R kuning sangat terang; S-Z kuning terang.

Kesempurnaan cutting atau potongan berlian akan menentukan pantulan sinar dari berlian tersebut. Untuk menguji kualitas cutting-nya, Mahardi menyarankan lihat batu berlian dari atas, sehingga Anda akan melihat pola pantuan sinarnya. Potongan berlian ini sangat menentukan harga berlian. Skala cut yang dibuat oleh GIA adalah: fair, good, very good, idealdan signature ideal.

Carat
Berlian dijual berdasarkan berat, bukan volume. Berlian ini disebut sebagai karat. Satu karat setara dengan 0,2 gram atau 200 mg. Berlian dengan ukuran karat-karat lebih besar tidak selau berarti lebih baik. Dengan kualitas yang lebih tinggi (dilihat dari cut, clarity dan color), berlian yang lebih kecil mungkin lebih bernilai daripada berlian yang lebih besar tapi kualitasya rendah.

Dalam karakteristik ini mengacu pada bagaimana berlian dihaluskan atau dipoles. Dua hal penting yang terdapat dalam diagram berlian adalah Culet dan Girdle. Culet adalah diagram pada sisi bagian bawah batu, dan girdle ialah mengacu pada tepi batu.
